Cast shines in Shrek musical
THE Toowoomba Philharmonic Society’s production of Shrek The Musical, which opened at the Empire Theatre last night, is community theatre at its best.
From a stand-out cast, a witty script, a wonderful orchestra and original sets, all the elements of the musical come together to create an experience the whole family can enjoy.
A highlight of the production is newcomer Hamish Wells who plays Donkey.
The 15-year-old steals every scene he is in and emphasises the qualities of Donkey’s character, his “annoying-ness” but also his immense loyalty and kindness, exquisitely.
Luke O’Hagan portrays Shrek as an ogre who just wants to live his life, not wanting his swamp to be invaded by fairytale creatures.
His good comedic timing provides numerous laughs throughout the show.
Elesha Hetherington’s performance as Princess Fiona again showed this Empire Theatre leading lady’s capabilities and it will be great to see what’s next for her.
Ultimately Shrek The Musical, like the film, is a story about accepting those who are different and tearing down the divides between us.
This production, through the great cast and music, delivers that message well.
So if you can, make sure you head down to the Empire Theatre this weekend to check out Shrek The Musical.
It really is an enjoyable production. This reporter saw the production complimentary of the Philharmonic Society.
