HIGHFIELDS is a step closer to getting a new police station.

The Queensland Police Service had been scouting Highfields for a suitable block of land on which to build a new police station for the town.

Today, Police Minister Mark Ryan announced a site had been identified and purchased.

The Palaszczuk Government has acquired land in Dau Rd Highfields for the site of the new police station.

He said subject to a final due diligence check, construction was expected to start next financial year.

“This is a $2.7 million project and one that meets the promise we made to the people of Toowoomba at the election last year,” he said.

“This is a significant investment in policing and public safety in Toowoomba now and into the future.

“The Highfields area is growing and, importantly, the new station will be able to accommodate additional policing resources as and when they are needed.”

Highfields at the moment is serviced by the Highfields Residential Police Beat which is staffed by two officers.

The growing township is also serviced by the 24-hour Toowoomba Police Station which is supported by district resources including detectives, road policing staff, a Tactical Crime Squad and crime prevention officers.

Because of the growing population, the QPS bought a block of land on Highfields Rd in 2009 with the intention of building a police station there. However, as a result of new flood modelling after the 2011 floods it appeared that in the rare but possible similar rain event the site could be cut off by road, making that block unsuitable.
