Antiques under the hammer Lifetime collection goes to auction

HUNDREDS of collectable enthusiasts turned out to an auction yesterday to get their hands on antiques collected over a lifetime.

The collection belongs to Toowoomba Turf Club deputy chair Ken Bullen and his family.

He is moving to the Sunshine Coast where he has bought a horse and cattle stud.

For the past 40 years, Mr Bullen has acquired a range of antique vehicles and equipment from horse-drawn wagons and sulkies to hand chaff cutters to old bottles.

Instead of taking his collection to the coast with him, he decided to auction it all off.

The items went under the hammer yesterday, with many people snapping up a bargain.

Mr Bullen said while it was sad to see his items auctioned off, it was time to move on.

“It rained quite heavily on Saturday which was fantastic for the region, but today the sky has cleared and it’s made for a good turn out,” he said.

“I was pleasantly surprised, we’ve had in excess of 100 bidder cards go out so it’s great to see.

“I’m sad to be letting go of all these memories but hopefully they’ll go on to make more happy memories for other people.”

On Sunday, October 21 Mr Bullen will also put up a wide range of antique furniture for auction at the Clifford Park Racecourse from 11am.

Furniture includes a 12-seater late Victorian dining table with cedar chairs, mahogany chaise lounges, bookcases and other colonial household items.

The Bullens have already sold their large home which was moved on site in 1999.
