OUR SAY We need more events like this

I WAS always a bit of a Diner en Blanc sceptic. I thought how fun could dressing up in all white and having a picnic in a secret location be. The answer in retrospect was not surprising.

It was incredibly fun. In fact, it was probably the most fun I, as a 20-something, have had in Toowoomba in the 10 months I’ve lived here.

Diner en Blanc began in Paris about 30 years ago when a few mates wanted to meet for a picnic in a park in Paris. The host asked everyone to dress in white so they’d be able to find each other. The event has since expanded right across the world and is held on six continents.

Toowoomba is growing every day. New shops are opening, popular restaurants now call the Garden City home. It’s only right that a big international event is now held in the city.

About 650 people attended Toowoomba’s inaugural Diner en Blanc at Toowoomba Grammar School on Saturday. It was certainly a sight to behold, seeing that many people in white on that lush green oval, eating, laughing and dancing together.

It’s events like this that continue to make Toowoomba such a liveable place for a 20-something like myself. We need to encourage similar events and festivals, on top of supporting those already here.

I hope Diner en Blanc returns next year, because if it does I will certainly be there.
