Elderly woman dies in Warrego Highway crash
POLICE are imploring motorists to take extra care while driving after an elderly woman was killed on the Warrego Highway yesterday.
The woman, aged in her 80s, died at the scene of the horror crash at Hatton Vale just after 9am.
Initial investigations indicate the woman entered the highway from Niemeyer Rd and crossed into the path of an oncoming 4WD.
“I plead to people to take extra care when crossing a road,” Country Patrol Service Acting Inspector Tony Neumann said.
POLICE are imploring drivers to take extra care and remain vigilant after an elderly woman was killed in a horror highway smash yesterday.
The 83-year-old woman was the sole occupant of a white Hyundai i30 hatchback which investigating police believe crossed into the path of an oncoming car on the Warrego Highway at Hatton Vale about 9am.
The woman was crossing the highway from Neimeyer Rd near the former Rusty’s fuel station when her car was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming grey Ford Territory.
Country Patrol Services Acting Inspector Tony Neumann said investigations were continuing into the crash, and appealed for anyone with dashcam footage to contact police.
“Initial police investigations would suggest unit one (Hyundai) proceeded across the Warrego Highway towards the centre refuge area and in doing so, the other vehicle crashed into the driver’s side of the vehicle,” Acting Insp. Neumann said.
“As a result, the driver of unit one (Hyundai) has passed away at the scene.”
The male driver of the second vehicle, a grey Ford Territory, suffered minor seatbelt injuries and was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition.
Acting Insp. Neumann said police would investigate all aspects of the crash under the Fatal Five, including speed and inattention.
He urged drivers to remain vigilant while on the roads.
“At the end of the day, most accidents like this occur due to the inattention of one of the drivers,” he said.
“I plead to people to take extra care when crossing a road, particularly a four-lane highway.
“The level of care needs to be significant.
“Make sure the road is clear before crossing.”
Anyone with dashcam footage, or any motorists who may have witnessed the crash, are urged to contact police or Policelink on 131 444.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
