TRAVEL TRICKS

ADD THESE ESSENTIALS TO YOUR MAKE-UP BAG AND YOU’LL ALWAYS ARRIVE LOOKING FRESH

- WORDS: AMBER MACPHERSON

Family visits, summer holidays and endof-year celebrations — ’tis the season to be travelling. Whether it’s many hours in a car or jetting off on a plane, long-haul travel can leave us looking frazzled.

After a long career on the road, celebrity make-up artist Dale Dorning has developed a knack for looking lush when you’re secretly exhausted. Travel-sized versions of make-up, perfume, deodorant and moisturiser, ensure your essential toolkit is practical and accessible.

“A great beauty tip to allow for the restrictions (on aeroplanes) is to decant your moisturiser and powders into travel-friendly containers,” Dale says.

“Most travel shops now stock bottles, jars and atomisers to allow for the in-flight liquid restrictions.

“You can label these and carry them in your favourite make-up bag, then arrive looking fresh by using your own products.

“Roll-on fragrances are also a great investment. Most designers make these now. They are compact and ideal for travel for a quick freshen up.”

During travel, keep your hair under wraps with a scarf and get as much sleep as possible with your eyes covered. “A headscarf is ideal for keeping your hair under control during the flight so your hair will look ‘just done’ on arrival,” Dale says.

“Keep your eye mask as it stretches and is perfect for future use.”

Dale recommends using items you’ve probably already got in the bathroom cabinet to soothe your skin.

“Aspirin is great for redness and pimples,” he says.

“I crush and dissolve slightly and apply to any pimples. Eye drops work well too.”

Pre-arrival, add some moisture to your lips with lip balm or paw paw ointment and exfoliate with a soft toothbrush. The rough skin will brush away and you can add more lip balm afterwards to rehydrate.

Finally, tending to your eyes pre-arrival can add life to your whole face.

“Curling your lashes and applying a quick coat of mascara will not only lift your eyes, but make them appear brighter,” Dale says.

Dale says he never travels without hand cream, moisturiser, toothbrush, toothpaste and floss and a big bottle of water.
