Children have fun in the sun
Students enjoy Under Eights Day
NEWTOWN State School teacher Michelle Rankine said it was fantastic to see the students enjoy themselves at the school’s Under Eights Day yesterday.
The school’s oval erupted in the morning with laughter and smiles from students from Prep to Year 2.
“Under Eights Day is an initiative from Early Childhood Australia to bring the school community and the local community together,” Mrs Rankine said.
“Some of the activities the children are doing today include futsal, karate, arts and cooking.
“We celebrate Under Eights Day every year and invite the kindergarten and the childcare centre along as well.”
Parents like Marisa Fenton came along to enjoy the celebrations with their children.
Mrs Fenton said her daughter Milana was excited to join in with the activities.
“We have had a lot of fun, we made a chicken and decorated cookies together,” Mrs Fenton said.
“The event is designed to get the young ones comfortable and encourage all the age groups under eight-years-old to play together.”
Newtown State School principal Tania Angus said the day was a celebration of everything that was great about childhood.
“This time is an important time for children to be given the opportunity to play and socialise,” Mrs Angus said.
“With the expectations around curriculum that we have now, it’s really important to still have that balance of study and play.”
