Housing for those in need
Villas to counter massive shortfall
WORK will start today on a new housing project to combat the shortage of accommodation options for people with a disability.
Disability provider CPL and property developer PNL Consulting will start construction this week on three new villas on Phyllis St in Harristown, which will cater for six people.
PNL director Philip Meyer said disability housing was a new venture for the longstanding development business.
“We have friends who work in disability support and one day started talking about the critical shortage of accommodation for people with a disability. They encouraged us to investigate the situation,” he said.
“We spoke to a number of providers and people with a disability, and quickly realised that not only was there very little stock available but virtually no choice either.”
CPL CEO Rhys Kennedy said the shortage of available housing for people with a disability became apparent as the National Disability Insurance Scheme continued to progress.
“The introduction of the NDIS has opened up choice and control for people with a disability over who provides them with the support they need to achieve their goals,” he said.
“Yet, when it comes to housing for people with complex support needs, there is very little choice.
“There are more than 2000 people in Queensland with a disability unable to access any housing.”
The villas were designed to provide practical amenities for its residents, such as accessible bathrooms and height adjustable kitchen benches.
