Funnel Webs in strong championship showing
INDOOR HOCKEY: Toowoomba Funnel Webs turned in a strong performance at this year’s under 18 Indoor Hockey State Championships to win through to the grand final in their second only appearance at the tournament.
Funnel Webs 1 team topped their pool, undefeated, to earn a spot in the decider at USQ’s Clive Berghofer Recreational Centre against the Rockhampton Turtles who dominated their pool with five convincing victories.
Rockhampton went on to claim the championship with a 2-0 victory with both goals coming from short-corner penalties.
Funnel Webs 1 players Elijah Mathewson and Carter Mogg tied for third highest goal scorers of the tournament with eight goals each.
Funnel Webs 2, consisting of a large contingent of younger players who will be playing in the under-15 State Championship in Brisbane in two weeks, placed eighth overall in the 11team championships.
Meanwhile, two Toowoomba female players have been selected in the under-18 Queensland indoor hockey team after their championship appearances at the weekend.
Funnel Webs women, in their first appearance in the under-18 Indoor Hockey State Championships, finished sixth overall in the event played on the Gold Coast.
Funnel Webs players Ella White and Julia Gannon finished in a tie as second highest goal scorers of the tournament, with five each.
Gannon and Georgina Greig were later rewarded for their stand-out tournament performances with Queensland selection.
The Queensland team will compete at the 2019 Australian Indoor Hockey Championships, to be held in Goulburn, New South Wales in January next year.
