FIRST-TIME CUP WINNER
TOOWOOMBA resident Maddison Payne’s first Melbourne Cup fashion experience was certainly memorable.
New to fashion competitions, Miss Payne emerged victorious in the fashions on the field event at Clifford Park’s Melbourne Cup celebrations yesterday.
However, Miss Payne may have had an advantage - her mother previously won the competition.
CLIFFORD PARK race course was awash with colour yesterday as Melbourne Cup madness descended on Toowoomba.
In a scorching 35 degrees, many guests took shelter in the air-conditioned marquee, sipping chilled drinks over a three course meal.
Toowoomba Turf Club CEO Blair Odgers said the race day’s atmosphere was close to that at Flemington.
“The heat has caused us a few challenges, but the crowd has adapted well,” Mr Odgers said.
“The fashion element today has really shone through, after Weetwood (Race Day) people have been feeling more comfortable to go that extra mile with their outfits.”
The weather wasn’t the only thing bringing the heat as dozens of dapper men and beautiful women posed up a storm during fashions on the field.
Corey Bellert took home the top prize for the men’s section and Maddison Payne emerged victorious in the women’s competition.
Miss Payne said the Melbourne Cup Day event was her first, and she was “surprised” with her win.
“I’ve never entered a fashions of the field competition before, but my mum has won a couple - so maybe it runs in the family,” she said.
Motor sport champion Will Power also attended, enjoying a home time break with family after his IndyCar Indianapolis 500 win in May.
