Go Get Sum holds off hot field to secure good win
RACING: Toowoomba eightyear-old Go Get Sum proved there is no substitute for honesty after he out-gunned his younger rivals to give jockey Bradley Appo a long-awaited return to the Clifford Park winner’s list on Saturday.
Go Get Sum ($12) got most punters off to a shaky meeting start when he outlasted solidfinishing Okanagan Miss ($3.30 ef ) for a short-head victory in the Ithink Property Benchmark 65 Handicap (1110m).
Race leader Mishani Shiraz ($3.30 ef ) held on fairly to be a half length back third.
Appo’s victory aboard Go Get Sum came at only his second race ride back from a 12-month break.
The win was also the gelding’s seventh for trainer Phyllis Kalinsowski from 48 starts.
“He doesn’t miss the placings all that often, and is just as honest as they come,” Kalinsowski said.
“He’s a dream horse to train. He never sweats up or gives any trouble.
“He just turns up and gives his best all the time.”
Jockey Emma Ljung escaped unharmed in a spill from Tahoe City after the race finish.
Lighty raced mare Umawinner served notice of perhaps better things to come when she returned to racing with an impressive win in the Trackside Photography Class 1 Handicap.
Umawinner ($2.25) finished powerfully from near the tail for apprentice Baylee Nothdurft to nail First Witness ($18) on the line for a short-head victory at her first start July.
Saturday’s win was only her second from nine starts but supporters will be hoping she can deliver on her potential this campaign.
“It was a big win,” trainer Lindsay Hatch said.
“She is nowhere near ready and there’s a lot of improvement in her.”
