1769 - James Cook takes formal possession of New Zealand.

1791 - Australia’s first successful grape vine is planted.

1838 - The perpetrato­rs of the Myall Creek Massacre in New South Wales are acquitted.

1889 - Brazil’s monarchy was overthrown.

1902 - Anarchist Gennaro Rubin failed in his attempt to murder King Leopold II of Belgium.

1920 - The League of Nations met for the first time in Geneva, Switzerlan­d.

1985 - Britain and Ireland signed an accord giving Dublin an official consultati­ve role in governing Northern Ireland.

1988 - The Palestine National Council, the legislativ­e body of the PLO, proclaimed the establishm­ent of an independen­t Palestinia­n state at the close of a four-day conference in Algiers.

2005 - In Amiens, France, Isabelle Dinoire became the first person to undergo a partial face transplant. She had been attacked by a dog earlier in the year.

2006 - Andy Warhol’s painting of Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong sold for $17.4 million. At the same auction Orange Marilyn sold for $16.2 million and Sixteen Jackies sold for $15.6 million. Birthdays
