Reward not revenge for Wildcats
BASKETBALL: Completing the perfect season is more important than revenge, according to Warwick coach Duncan McKenzie.
The Wildcats get the chance to record the feat when they face off against USQ on Saturday night in the Big Q grand final, their nemesis from last year.
In a one-sided display, the Dragons took home the inaugural title after racing out to an 18-point lead after the first quarter.
But rather than look to the past, McKenzie is focused on making sure his unbeaten side finishes the job.
“Revenge is always on the mind, but I really want the guys to win this weekend to get the reward for the effort they’ve put in this season,” McKenzie said.
“Both our teams know each other pretty well and there’s always a fair bit of in-house rivalry.
“They’re probably understrength from how they started the season but they’re the type of team that can do anything on the day. I can guarantee not a lot of people expected them to beat the Saints.
“It’s not a game to take lightly.”
The grand final will also see the announcement of the league MVP and starting five, and McKenzie said he hoped Josh Cremasco could work into calculations.
“I’d love to see Josh make the five. He’s fought hard all year,” he said.
“One of the things we wanted to do was highlight him for the Toowoomba Mountaineers and I think he has delivered on that.”
