Newtown officially back in TRL

- Sean Teuma

RUGBY LEAGUE: After a nervous wait, the famous Blue bags will again feature in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.

An executive meeting on Monday evening confirmed the return of Newtown to the second division competition along with former Border Rugby League side, the Texas Terriers.

Committee member Paul Dolley said it was a welcome return for the proud club.

“The last few weeks has been a bit tough, it’s been a long wait,” Dolley said.

“The boys getting were getting a bit antsy wanting to know an answer but it’s great to have got given the go-ahead.

“It was pretty sad to see it shut down a few years ago, but a few of the old boys and committee got together and were passionate about getting it all up and going.

“There’s a lot of interest from old boys wanting to come back and play for the club and hopefully it is the start of something big that can roll on in the future years.”

While given the green light, TRL chairman Brian Gilroy said both Newtown and Texas would have to meet certain criteria to ensure they took to the field in 2019.

This includes backing from sponsors to ensure financial viability, player numbers for the season ahead and putting in place an administrative structure per QRL requirements.
