Toowoomba Rep’s last for 2018 is Glorious!
SHE was known as “the first lady of the sliding scale” and a soprano whose pitch was far from perfect but she never let other people’s opinions hold her back.
Glorious! by Peter Quilter, being performed at Toowoomba Repertory until December 1, is the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins.
Florence was an enthusiastic soprano who warbled and screeched her way through performances to the laughter of invited audiences in New York in the 1940s.
“However, it is not a play that pokes fun at Florence but rather focuses on her joyous embrace of what made her happy and her companion’s tremendous love and support of her endeavours,” director Mark Phythian said.
“People may recall her story portrayed by Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant in the popular 2016 biographical comedy film Florence Foster Jenkins.”
The play spins from Florence’s screeching charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall.
The Toowoomba Repertory cast features Elaine Coates, Brett Fahey, Ken Morrissey, Beth Geoghegan, Kerrie Edwards, Diane Rozynski and Robyn Campbell.
Tickets are available online at www.toowoombarep.com.au and the theatre’s box office at 94 Margaret St (opposite Queens Park) which is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm or until tickets are sold out.
