COME CLEAN

HERE’S WHY YOUR FACE DESERVES A DETOX TOO

- WORDS: CHANTAY LOGAN

As those cheeky Christmas cocktails start to add up, you may be considering a diet detox.

When you’re cleaning up your act, don’t forget your body’s biggest organ — your skin.

Skinvitals founder and product developer Lynne Meaney says our skin is exposed to a myriad of toxins and environmental stressors on a daily basis, whether they are found in the food we eat, the make-up we use or the pollution we are exposed to. Here are her tips for preventing and reversing any damage:

DOUBLE CLEANSE

Before going to bed, ensure you are washing all of your make-up off. Try to do a double cleanse. Choose an oil based or creamy cleanser that works hard to remove all makeup, dirt and any residue left from other products, and then use a second cleanser (maybe wash or micellar style) as a safe guard. If you’re not sure your cleanser is working correctly, use a face wipe after you get out of the shower — any remnants of foundation or mascara will be sure to show up and tell you that your cleanser isn’t doing its job. Also be mindful of things that your face is touching that might not be clean — your hands, hair and even your pillowcase.

EXFOLIATE

Make sure you are exfoliating at least once and up to three times a week to avoid build up on your skin. Exfoliators work by removing the surface dead skin cells and any product by physically buffing away at the top dead skin layers. Exfoliating will help to remove some of those impurities caused by the elements and will reveal brighter and healthy skin.

MOISTURISE AND PROTECT

Exposure to the sun and wind will wreak havoc on your skin, even if you don’t notice it straight away. Ensure that you are applying both a moisturiser and sunscreen underneath your make-up daily. Moisturise again at night and reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

TREAT YOUR SKIN REGULARLY

Make time each week to really take care of your skin. Sure it’s important to do your daily routine, but work in at least one night per week where you will make time to give your skin an extra detox, like using Skinvitals Detox mask.

DETOX FROM THE INSIDE OUT

You are what you eat when it comes to the condition of your skin. It goes without saying that consuming sugars and saturated fats will eventually affect your skin and lead to congestion and excess sebum. For glowing skin, choose healthy foods, eats lots of fresh vegetables and fruit and drink plenty of water to flush out toxins. Don’t discount what some aerobic exercise does to help achieve glowing, energised skin. All that oxygen not only makes you feel great, but leaves your skin looking great too.
