DDSWCA wants to finish on a high

-

CRICKET: While DDSWCA won’t feature in the finals of the Lord Taverner’s Competition, their run of form to end the season indicates a bright future.

The Darling Downs team has lifted in recent times to record victories in its last three games, and has the chance to add a fourth when they host Gold Coast at TGS tomorrow.

Coach Paul Toohey said it would be a deserving way to finish the season off when they take on the current southern division leaders.

“Gold Coast are at the top of our pool but they don’t hold any demons for us,” Toohey said.

“I think the team is more than capable if we put in the same effort and performance of the last few weeks.

“It would be a fitting way to finish at our home ground and with four on the trot.”

Toohey has put the turnaround in form to taking lessons from a number of close losses in the early part of the season and being able to turn the heartbreak into elation.

“One of the biggest pluses (of this run) has been the boys have learnt from the experiences early and put in some really good, complete performances, which is a big bonus moving forward,” he said.

“We’ve always known they’ve had the skills to beat the sides from Brisbane, it was just a case of being able to stay in the contest for the whole time.

“With some of the early losses we lost concentration at the wrong time, but with the recent efforts the region is only going to be stronger for it.

“The biggest thing is that you need to be ready to play at your best all the time. You can’t ever think you’re on top. You can be on top and lose, and you can’t give a chance to a team on the ropes.”

Toohey is hoping this current crop sticks around for the competition next year as they continue to make their way through the representative season.

“These boys will play against next year and they’re only going to get stronger as the years go by,” he said.

“Hopefully this bounces to other competitions they’ll play in as well.” DDSWCA hosts Gold Coast at TGS today from 10am.
