TOOWOOMBA coffee lovers will be able to get a sip of luxury from today.

Drive-in coffee store Blue Ice Espresso will begin to serve coffee with flakes of 24-carat gold in it from today, the first time any coffee shop in Queensland has served the luxurious delicacy.

Coffee-shop owner Ali Kashif decided to bring the luxurious touch to Toowoomba’s coffee scene after being inspired by a coffee he had in a Dubai hotel several years ago.

“Gold is something that people use for ornaments,” Mr Kashif said.

“But it can be used in food, rich people use it in food.

“It’s mostly served in the Dubai area, there are some coffee shops in Melbourne serving it, but I don’t think it’s anywhere in Queensland as per my research.”

The special gold coffee will only be on sale for a limited time, in celebration of the holiday season.

It won’t come cheap either, with a single cup topped with the gold flakes costing $20.

Mr Kashif, who is originally from Pakistan but lived in the United Arab Emirates for a number of years, said introducing the new drink was all about the experience of trying a coffee with 24-carat gold in it.

“When people come to Toowoomba, it should be on the todo list,” he said.

“That they can come and have a taste of luxury.”

To make the gold coffee Mr Kashif has to put on white gloves and carefully use tweezers to place the gold leaves on top of the coffee.

“The gold leaves are very sensitive,” he said.

“You have to handle them very carefully.”
