WHERE WAS WILL POWER?

We ask how he missed out on top 100

MOTORSPORT: Queensland’s top 10 sports stars of all time are revealed in today’s The Chronicle.

Since last Saturday we’ve been publishing excerpts of the Top 100 list – compiled by our counterparts at The Courier Mail – as well as our own Top 20 in last Saturday’s edition.

Included in the list are some truly talented sports stars.

Athletes who changed the way their sports are played – establishing legacies that will never be forgotten.

There is, however, one name missing from that Top 100 – a name we, at The Chronicle, feel is very important.

Toowoomba’s IndyCar series champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power.

We spoke to Will’s father Bob about the list yesterday.

“I don’t want to be drawn too much into who should be on the list,” Bob Power said.

“These things are very subjective and it’s hard to rate one person’s success against another.

“I will say we (the Power family) have always been proud of Will and everything he’s achieved.”

A 32-time IndyCar race winner, Bob said Will’s success had a little to with genes and a lot to do with attitude.

“I think he’s always had that killer instinct,” Bob said

“He’s a fierce competitor. I didn’t have that in me when I was racing, at least not at the level Will does.

“But his great-grandfather had it.

“More importantly though he’s a hard worker. He puts an immense amount of work into everything he does to improve himself.”

Bob said that desire “to improve” is present on and off the track.

“He’s always been prepared to put in a lot of work,” he said.

“From day one he’s shown the pace but he takes nothing for granted.

“He does a lot of cycling, swimming and gym work to stay fit.

“Off the track he thinks about his driving technique and how he can improve it and he’s always going over his car data – he’s very good at interpreting and applying that.

“He’s got a top-of-the-line simulator to practise in and has a great relationship with his whole team from the owner down to the crews.

“He gives himself every chance to win.”
