Weather heats up on the Downs

DARLING Downs residents are being warned to prepare for heatwave conditions next week as an oncoming trough brings hot winds from the west.

Bureau of meteorology spokeswoman Janine Yuasa said residents could expect temperatures of more than seven degrees above the December average.

“There is a trough moving over from the west on Sunday and there is hot air travelling ahead of it,” Ms Yuasa said.

“Toowoomba can expect temperatures of up to 35 degrees this Sunday and Monday, with Oakey reaching a high of 38 degrees.”

Temperatures will heat up today, followed by a midweek trough that will bring respite.

“During Monday we are expecting a trough from the north-west and that will bring cooler temperatures to Toowoomba and the surrounds,” Ms Yuasa said.

“There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, and then again midweek.

“We are not expecting a great deal of rainfall, 1mm to 2mm at most, bringing the temperature back down to 25 degrees in Toowoomba on Wednesday.”

The heat increase fits with BOM’s summer outlook predictions, released on Thursday. The report forecasts an 80 per cent chance for temperatures to exceed average conditions in towns across Queensland over the next three months.

Former president of the Climate Health Alliance, Dr Liz Hanna, advised residents to factor in weather events when they planned their day.

“The best way to avoid becoming unwell is to listen to your body – you must stay hydrated, exercise less and rest often,” she said.

“Keep an eye on children and the elderly, as often they are not able to regulate their heat as efficiently.”

Dr Hanna also warned residents to keep their mental health in check, with the incidence of violence and depression increasing during hot weather.
