Bid for Adani projects
Wagners’ airstrip put on hold
TOOWOOMBA businesses are being urged to bid for work constructing Australia’s largest coal mine after it announced it would self-fund the massive project.
Adani this week declared it would 100 per cent finance its Carmichael Mine in Central Queensland after years of environmental and political wrangling over the controversial project.
While Rockhampton and Townsville will be the primary source for employees on the mine, predicted to generate 8000 positions as it ramps up, the mining giant has encouraged businesses in regional centres to bid for work packages.
“In the initial ramp up and construction phase, there will be more than 1500 direct jobs on the mine and rail project and thousands of indirect jobs, especially in places like Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay and the Isaac region,” a spokeswoman said.
“We recognise the skills and expertise of many businesses in the Toowoomba region and we’re looking forward to working with them on a variety of opportunities as the Carmichael project progresses.”
Work packages will be listed and updated on the Adani website.
Wagners in January this year was awarded the tender to build the mine’s airstrip as part of its initial plans.
“Having adopted a gradual construction and ramp up for the mine to 27.5 million tonnes per annum, the airport facilities as originally contemplated are not immediately necessary,” the spokeswoman said.
“In the initial period we will use the existing airstrip on the mining lease, however there will still be a need to build airport facilities to service the mine’s requirements in the future.”
Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow was last month in Toowoomba to encourage the region’s businesses to tender for work packages on the project.
Adani will start as an opencut mine comparable to others in the state, with production ramping up to 27.5mtpa.
