Qld record broken in Toowoomba

-

WEIGHTLIFTING: A career best performance in Toowoomba has etched Chevy Sukkar’s name into the record books.

The Toowoomba Weightlifting Association was the venue for the recent staging of the Queensland Cup.

Sukkar, representing the Ipswich Weightlifting Club, produced lifts of 121kg in the snatch and 141kg in the clean and jerk to finish first place in the men’s 81kg category and take out best male lifter of the competition.

“I came in two kilos underweight and it was a tough day. I was successful with three of my six lifts,” he said.

“I missed the first snatch and got the second two, and only my first clean and jerk but still managed to take out the whole weekend.”

Sukkar is very new to the sport, and the 26-year-old credits the team behind him in helping him to break a record.

“When I was 22 I was sitting on the couch and not doing anything with my life,” he said.

“I decided I wanted to make a difference. I was a crossfit athlete and have been a weightlifter for 13 weeks now.

“I’ve gotten a better score with every competition I’ve entered. I hope to go to the Pacific Games next year and as time progresses hopefully the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.

“My coaches Jackson Solofa and Scotty Holmes have helped me get here and mean the world to me.”
