SANTA CLAUS

IS THERE any more community-minded person at this time of year than our very own Santa Claus?

No matter what weather Toowoomba and Darling Downs puts on around December 24/25, Santa still makes the trek from the North Pole for a special visit atop The Range for Christmas.

Obviously, Toowoomba is one of Santa’s favourite places.

After all, just look at the gifts he’s showered us with over these past few years.

“Well, I did give you a new airport,” Santa told The Chronicle over the phone from his cosy lounge room on the North Pole.

“Little Johnny Wagner had been writing to me for years wanting an airport and Mrs Claus and I thought, since he’s been so good and well behaved, we’d put the Wellcamp Airport under his Christmas tree.

“I’m sure he was very excited when he got up Christmas morning to find that in his stocking.

“I just hope Wellcamp has its air traffic controllers working late on Monday night for our descent over Toowoomba.”

Since then, Santa has provided us with a new huge shopping centre in the middle of town, complete with beer garden to toast the success of Christmas; some new and exciting bars and its seems he brings us a new coffee shop each month throughout the year.

“Your Mayor Paul Antonio has been writing to me for all sorts of things in recent years, some of his requests are a little hard to provide, such as regular rainfall,” Santa said.

“However, we do our best and so that he wasn’t too disappointed with the ongoing dry conditions we thought a new civic precinct would be nice to go with the new library and The Annex behind City Hall was Mrs Claus’ classy touch.

“I know it’s been dry across the Darling Downs so we’re hoping to get you a little rain in the lead-up to Christmas Day.

“Last year, Rudolph did a fetlock landing in Toowoomba the ground was so hard.

“And, I got my woolly gown caught on those obelisks you have down your main street as we flew in from the north to drop gifts off at City Hall.

“Don’t worry, Mrs Claus has sewn my gown back together for this year’s visit so all should be fine for next Monday night’s run.”
