Somerset and Condamine serve up plenty of catches

- WITH KRIS GEORGE FROM FISH ’N’ BITS BAIT & TACKLE

THE bass fishing is really hotting up right now at Somerset with the schooled bass firing up in the afternoons.

Trolling or cast and retrieve with spoons, blades and tailspinners have worked really well around Pelican Point and Kirkleigh Island.

Most of the fish are in around the 30ft mark either suspended or on the bottom.

Use your fish finder or troll some lures to locate your target and then hang on.

Live baits will work best but the frozen options will also have success.

Leslie Dam

There have been consistent reports from Leslie Dam with plenty of nice-sized yellowbelly and smaller cod coming in frequently.

Most anglers are trolling TN60 Jackalls along with other deep diving hardbodies through the creek bed.

For the bait anglers, salt water yabbies have been by far the best and there has still been the odd larger cod picked up in the early mornings.

Condamine River

With cod season now in full swing many anglers are fishing all parts of the Condamine and connecting creeks.

Most areas are best accessed via kayak but some anglers have had success from the land.

The Condamine is a great fishery and many baits and lures work well – the most popular being spinnerbaits, surface lures and live shrimp.

With some big cod, and a few nice yellowbelly caught this week, I’d suggest the Condamine River around Allora as a good place to fish over the coming weeks having less angler pressure than most of the lakes.

Boondoomba Dam

The summer fishing at Boondoomba has begun with most

fish sitting in what is called a thermocline (a comfortable zone of water) which is around 30ft.

Checking out from most points in around 30ft is a great start, while there has also been some big school suspended down around the dam wall area.

Once located, either bait or sinking vibes will work best.

There have been plenty of good catches lately and the fishing is red hot with a very similar bite occurring at

Bjelke-Petersen Dam.

Connelly Dam

A relatively unknown lake but it is stacked with good cod and yellowbelly.

The anglers that frequent this location have regular success and lately the cod have been on the bite with some good reports of quality catches on surface lures and spinnerbaits.

The yellowbelly have also been active mainly on saltwater yabbies and live shrimp.

Gold Coast

Inshore has been great fishing

with plenty of flathead, whiting and bream caught over the sand flats on shallow diving lures and even surface.

The canals are starting to produce some nice mangrove jack and the odd report of barramundi.

Offshore has seen many anglers out trolling for pelagics with some nice wahoo and dolphin fish on offer especially around the FADS and close to the EAC.

Six and eight-inch skirts along with 160 laser pros trolled in a spread have worked best while live baits will most likely be the best options
