Root’s poor run bound to end soon

- — Julian Linden

Jos Buttler says it is only be a matter of time before Aussie fans get to see England Test skipper Joe Root piling on the runs in the Big Bash after making a modest start with the Sydney Thunder.

Root threw his wicket away for 18 in his debut against the Melbourne Stars last week and then added just nine against the Sixers after being involved in a mix-up with Callum Ferguson, who was given out with both batsmen at the same end.

Root’s meagre total of just 27 runs from in his first two outings with the Thunder isn’t what fans expect, but Root’s English vice-captain Buttler reckons it won’t be long before he makes a big one.

“He doesn’t need to do anything,” Buttler said.

“The nature of Twenty20 cricket is that there will be days when you have quiet days and world-class players like him will always find their way in.

“He’s a fantastic player and he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone.”

Despite an impressive average of 35.77 from his 28 T20 internationals, Root was unceremoniously dropped from the England side in July this year.

Although he hasn’t posted a big score just yet, the Thunder have won both of their matches so far in impressive fashion to mark themselves as early contenders for the BBL title.

Their next assignment is a top-of-the-table showdown with the also unbeaten Hurricanes in Hobart tonight.

“Hobart are a fantastic side with some fantastic players as well, but every team has in the tournament as well so we look forward to that game and prepare accordingly,” Buttler said.
