NEW Year’s Day will never be the same for Toowoomba residents Isabella and Matthew Betts who welcomed their first baby, Fletcher, into the world yesterday morning.

Fletcher James Betts was born an hour after midnight at the Toowoomba Hospital, one of the first babies of 2019, surprising the young couple with his early arrival.

“We had an initial due date of January 14,” Mrs Betts said.

“I was brought into the hospital on Sunday night because I was feeling a little unwell.

“I thought it might be food poisoning - but then they told me the baby was coming.”

The couple had planned to spend New Year’s Eve with the family but were “ecstatic” to be holding their new son as celebrations in the Garden City dialled down.

“He’s here and he’s beautiful we wouldn’t change a thing,” Mrs Betts said.

“The first moment we got to hold him was an unreal experience - it was unforgettable.

“Our families are super excited; it is the first grandchild on either side - so he is the next generation.

The couple chose the baby’s moniker while on their honeymoon and they said the name “just stuck”.

The couple is excited for what 2019 will bring, having “started the year on a high”.

“We have just bought a new house, and we now have Fletcher, so we are looking forward to this year,” Mr Betts said.

“But right now, we are excited to get some rest - we’ve been awake for quite a while.”
