Resolutions bring gym use spike

TOOWOOMBA fitness clubs are preparing for a flurry of activity, as residents begin to work on their New Year’s resolutions.

The Fit Lab owner Chris Hillman said membership sales usually doubled in the first month of every year.

“New Year’s is definitely a big one. It’s where all the resolutions are made, and everyone is looking to get on a health kick,” Mr Hillman said.

“We usually sign around 120 people per month, and that doubles to 200-plus members in January - the spike is considerable.

“We expect the rush to start this week.”

Mr Hillman said many of his patrons resolved to get healthier following the festive season.

“Christmas becomes the excuse period where we all go forget it, we just write it off and eat what we want and drink what we want,” he said.

“Then the guilt kicks in and we look to reset and start again.

“It’s one of the things we all have in common, looking after our health.”

Hitting the gym is not only good for physique, it also leads to renewed motivation to achieve other goals.

“The success of a work-out has a run-on effect,” Mr Hillman said.

“It’s such a good feeling to see people come in and leave beaming because they know they have achieved something.

“We aim to help people get value out of their memberships, we want to see them coming in the door and working towards their goals.

“One of the reasons my brother and I bought the gym was to bring the option of health to more people.”

Brothers-in-law Terry Morris and Matthew Armanasco were two patrons keen to beat the rush, fitting in a workout at The Fit Lab on New Year’s Day.

“We usually come every weekend together,” Mr Morris said.

“But I’m on holiday at the moment, so I thought why not train today.”

Both men said their fitness resolution was to keep up their usual routine of five sessions a week.
