Selectors must share blame for poor team

- WITH SPORTS EDITOR JASON GIBBS

THERE will be no end to Australia’s cricket woes as long as we have a board of selectors.

Do away with the selectors, put coach Justin Langer solely in charge of the team and I believe you will see a massive improvement in the team.

The players are ultimately responsible for a team’s results, but I honestly feel we are constantly starting every single Test match at a disadvantage because “too many cooks have spoiled the broth”.

When Langer took over Aussie cricket’s top job he did so saying performances would dictate selection.

And yet the make-up of our Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka clearly suggests otherwise.

Why is that I hear you ask? Simply put I believe Langer has a very clear idea of what he wants his side to look like but he has to listen and answer to a board of selectors.

A board of selectors that has differing views who should be considered for a baggy green.

A board of selectors that in my mind has made some glaring mistakes in their selections – intent on picking players with potential over players that are in good form.

Matthew Wade’s omission is the biggest of those mistakes.

Wade has been in imperious form of late scoring 1225 runs while averaging 51.04 in the Sheffield Shield over the past two summers.

Lining up in the middle order for Tasmania, the wicketkeeper is this season’s form batsman scoring 571 runs from six matches at an average of 63.44.

However chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns believes Wade needs to bat higher up the order for Tasmania if he wants to lock down a spot in the Australian middle order.

I am the only who thinks that is a ridiculous rationale?

Yes I understand you can’t have him replace current skipper and keeper Tim Paine but he deserves a spot on form alone. At least they (the selectors) got the Marsh brothers decision right.
