Speed limit review for ‘dangerous’ road

THE Toowoomba Regional Council is reviewing the speed limit on Old Goombungee Rd after pressure from residents worried that drivers will kill someone on the busy roadway.

At least nine complaints have been lodged with the council in the past three years relating to unsafe drivers, with residents reporting dangerous speeds have resulted in vehicle rollovers.

One woman’s property fence has been damaged at least four times in recent years.

A woman was taken to hospital after a vehicle rolled on the road on Thursday, with the car left resting on its roof after the incident.

Councillor Carol Taylor, who chairs the council’s infrastructure committee, said recent resealing works had been completed in the area where the car rolled.

“Signs erected through the roadworks signalled to drivers that they are entering roadworks and should reduce speed, drive slowly, beware of loose rocks, and loss of traction,” she said.

“It is incumbent on road users to drive to the road conditions and particularly to take notice of council road signage as a guide to changed road conditions.

“Toowoomba Regional Council are (sic) aware of nine requests over the last three years to review various types of signage and also speed controls of Old Goombungee Rd.

“As a result of these requests, council has commissioned an external consultant to conduct a review of the speed limit on Old Goombungee Rd.”

Cr Taylor said at least one life on the roads had been saved each year since the implementation of the council’s Regional Road Safety Strategy in 2011.

“Better drivers, better roads and targeted enforcement are all part of the road safety puzzle,” she said.
