Region’s sunflower fields are in full bloom

SUNFLOWERS are in full bloom around the region, attracting both tourists and residents.

Looking at the sea of golden fields, it’s hard to resist stopping to snap some photos. Like many others, Tamlyn Wolfenden and Tim Swinson did exactly that, with a mini photoshoot in a crop of sunflowers at Oakey.

Mr Swinson is a well-known photographer around town and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create some stunning images.

“Crop sunflowers are huge. Much bigger than the regular sunflowers you see at the florist or in shops,” he said.

“Flowers can be the size of your head or bigger and more than 6ft tall and the giant fields of bright yellow make a beautiful sight.”

Ms Wolfenden said sunflowers perfectly captured nature in all its glory.

“Sunflowers with their eye-catching colours have an automatic uplifting feeling on your mood and an association with joy and happiness,” she said.

“I love the bright colours and the way nature has so perfectly created them to follow the sun.

“To me it is symbolic that there is always hardship in life but if you keep focused on the light then you will thrive and bloom to your fullest potential despite adversity.”

The pair had permission to photograph within the Oakey sunflower field and Mr Swinson said it was important to get permission before heading onto someone’s farm.

“Farmers in my experience are pretty good if you ask them nicely and are respectful of their crops,” he said.

Last week The Chronicle reported on sunflower season being in full bloom and the next day USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie was driving back to Toowoomba when she spotted a crowd outside an Allora sunflower field.

She stopped to take photos of the flowers and crowds, sharing them on social media.

“Sunflowers + The Chronicle feature = at least 12 cars, 2 drones and a bemused farmer,” she said in a post on Instagram.
