BOXING: The Brayd Smith Cup is set to go to another level when City and Country square off for their next encounter in Toowoomba in eight weeks’ time.

The cup, founded in memory of former amateur and professional champion Brayd Smith, returns to Rumours International on March 9 as part of the city’s biggest annual boxing show.

The TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights 22 card is highlighted by the IBF World Youth Championship clash of Toowoomba’s Steve Spark and Mexican Ronaldo Castillo.

The Brayd Smith Cup came into being in 2016 and has continued to grow in stature as a prized trophy and pathway for some of Queensland’s most exciting amateur prospects.

Toowoomba’s Billy Holland will captain the country team while a friend and rival of the late Brayd Smith, Mitch Coomer, will lead city in its title defence.

“The cup just continues to grow in prestige and is a great platform, particularly for the country boys, to box on such a high-profile fight card,” promoter Brendon Smith said.

Coomer will be out to help steer city to a fourth successive victory.

“Brayd Smith was the nicest guy in boxing and I was lucky enough to box against him, so I'm extremely honoured to be named as city captain,” Coomer said.

“I'm looking forward to a great night of boxing and the city team leaving with the Brayd Smith Cup for the fourth year in a row.”
