Last hope to save RSL

Meeting to elect new committee

- MARIAN FAA

A SPECIAL meeting to elect a new committee for the Warwick RSL Memorial Club is a matter of urgency, according to concerned ex-committee members who fear this may be the “last chance” to save the beloved venue from insolvency.

With the club facing serious debt that is understood to be more than $1 million, including thousands owed to the Australian Taxation Office, long-time club member Lorraine Dent said new leadership was needed.

“People are asking why we can’t just wait until the next AGM in March, but what people have to realise is that this could be our last chance,” Mrs Dent said.

“This is nothing personal; this is about keeping our club open.”

A special general meeting, at which the current committee stands to be voted out and a new committee appointed, will take place at Kings Theatre tomorrow at 7pm.

The meeting was triggered by a petition displaying signatures from more than 15 Memorial Club members, who called for the current committee to resign.

Mrs Dent, who resigned from the management committee in 2017, said an independent chair would be appointed to lead tomorrow’s meeting.

“Everyone will have a chance to be heard and to ask questions, but everyone needs to be respectful and cordial about it all,” she said.

“We need as many people to come and be ready.”

The Warwick Daily News attempted to contact president Geraldine O’Neil for comment.

Members are invited to attend the special general meeting in Kings Theatre on January 15 at 7pm. Proxy votes must be dropped to the Warwick RSL Memorial Club front desk by 5pm that day.
