Groups enjoy $95,000
Community, sport clubs gain funds
SEVERAL of Toowoomba’s community and sporting groups have celebrated receiving nearly $100,000 in federal grants to fund expansion plans and restoration works.
The Toowoomba North Bowling Club ($65,000), respite centre Brightside on Victoria ($20,000) and the Darling Downs Swimming Association ($10,000) were awarded funds under two different federal programs.
Groom MP Dr John McVeigh announced the funding yesterday across Toowoomba, praising the groups for their commitment to the community across different fields.
“The people who make up these important organisations work tirelessly for the benefit of the wider community and I am truly grateful for what they do,” he said.
The Toowoomba North Bowling Club received the funds through the Move It Aus Community Sport Infrastructure program to upgrade and improve its facilities. Changes included building a large outdoor undercover area to improve weather protection, as well to host social gatherings and events.
“It is a key priority of our government to promote the social and health benefits of physical activity and sport and our investment to upgrade facilities and infrastructure will provide a real encouragement for those local residents not currently active,” Dr McVeigh said.
Brightside on Victoria earned its $20,000 through the fourth round of the Stronger Communities program to fund an expansion project, so more disability clients can learn skills like cooking, photography or computer literacy.
“There is high demand for services within the disability sector so this significant expansion is expected to help meet some of those needs in the community,” Dr McVeigh said.
The Darling Downs Swimming Association will put its Strong Communities program funding towards a new timing software system and improvements to the group’s display boards.
