Making a difference

- Ryan Walker

We live here ‘cos we love it!

I grew up in Highfields before my family and I moved to Toowoomba when I was about 15.

Apart from a couple of years living in Adelaide, I have lived here all my life.

Toowoomba is a beautiful city which is nice and relaxed to live in.

This city has everything we need but it’s not ridiculously busy like living in a capital city.

I spent about two years in Adelaide living with relatives while I worked for the National Australia Bank down there.

Adelaide has similar characteristics to Toowoomba in that it is also a beautiful, laid-back, big country city.

When I moved back from Adelaide, I spent a couple of years working in sales at a bank, but it didn’t suit me, so I started studying nursing which was when I got the idea to get into support work.

Working as a support worker was a rewarding experience for me.

I was born and bred in Toowoomba and have lived here my whole life.

Toowoomba is great city and I like the way the city is progressing.

I have been a carpenter ever since I finished school.

My father had a background in carpentry and he encouraged me to get a trade which St Mary’s College helped to get a schoolbased apprenticeship.

The great thing about carpentry is that you can see the results of your work when it’s finished.

Whenever I get time off work, I try to catch up with my friends and family as much as possible.

I worked out in the west as an agricultural scientist before I moved to the Toowoomba region 15 years ago.

The reason why I moved to Toowoomba was because I wanted to move into the social services industry and an opportunity presented itself and I took it.

Both my husband and I worked in agricultural science where we eventually moved into the social science of agriculture. It was an interesting career.

We live out on a lovely five-acre property in Cabarlah where we turned three acres of it into our own private botanical garden filled with plenty of native species.

The project took us about 15 years to finish and it’s wonderful to be able to be in that garden every weekend.

Toowoomba is an amazing region because it is filled with a lot of great people who want to make a difference. This city has great opportunities to show other places in the world how a big city with a country attitude can make a difference.

My family and I have lived in the Crows Nest region for the past 15 areas.

We decided to move there to be closer to our family.

It is a lovely area to live in, the trees are nice, and it is quite a serene place to be.

In my spare time I enjoy playing guitar which I was inspired to learn after listening to the song Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.

I find playing guitar is a good way to relax.
