COUNCIL

IN response to a comment made by Bob Carroll, I can’t believe some of the more recent matters being reported on in relation to council and councillors.

It is fair to say that people say/do some silly things when they are “under the pump”.

Elections are just 14 months away, folks.

In my humble opinion, 50% should go - some are there on name only, others to stroke their egos whilst there are a few who appear to do very little... but then, where else are they going to get a job that pays $100k plus per annum.

I know now who I would like to see as mayor and who I would retain as councillors, and if I named names, I would open a real can of worms.

Yes, it’s easy to be critical - but what is much more difficult is finding people with the credentials and business experience to fill these vacancies; finding people who want to be on the council for the right reasons.

Start thinking about what I am saying, folks - from where I sit, all up we may need up to six “newbies”. It is time for us to positively embrace change.

I’m interested in your thoughts. What is really interesting is reading the other comments made on Facebook by a number of concerned locals. RUSSELL WILSON, Toowoomba

RANGE BYPASS

OF particular interest and relevance to many locals is the naming of the new range bypass which is nearing completion, possibly mid 2019.

I know, with respect, some, perhaps many may have a favourite name or person they would like it called after.

I feel this would be absolutely no help to the hundreds and thousands of motorists who will arrive in Toowoomba not only from all parts of Australia but overseas as well. They will usually wish to continue their journey as quickly as they can.

So call our new range crossing what it is. Either second range crossing, Toowoomba range bypass, something along those lines because that is what it is.

There, of course, may have to be a toll.

I am fairly sure the truck operators will still be better off as they will avoid all the stops and starts of travelling through a busy city. This is very hard on their brakes, tyres, engines, transmissions etc.

And it will mean an Easter message for the trucks both ways. And it should make our present range road freer of heavy vehicles and therefore safer.

Here’s hoping anyway.

UNJUSTIFIED

SO THE Southern Downs councillors have voted unanimously to award themselves an unjustified 2.1% pay rise, despite the option to forego it. This comes after a 2.25% pay rise was awarded just 12 months ago.

Wow. They sure proved me and the rest of the hard working taxpayers wrong. Ka-ching!

CENTRE CONSTRUCTION

ANYONE who has been to Wilsonton Shopping centre recently and negotiated the obstacle course, you would see the great job Hutchinson Builders is doing.

Without closing the centre down they are working around us shoppers and getting on with the job. we can look forward to an up-to-date centre with more amenities for a growing population.

Let’s hope we still have adequate parking. As of April 1 with 4x4 free days car drivers should be able to go in safety.

BANKING COMMISSION

REPORTED in the New Daily 23/01/ 19 that Scott Morrison was ‘the “last holdout” into establishing a royal commission into banking.

I say “so what?” Can’t any member of parliament including Bill Shorten be wrong and be forgiven? MATTHEW WEATHERLEY, Highfields
