Fanatics ready for a good time

- BROOKE DUNCAN

MORE than four hours in the car with three children can be a bit much for even the most patient of mothers.

But for Rachel Gower, the Melon Festival is completely worth it.

The Gowers will pack their bags and set off from their Graman, NSW, home this week, all to take the long-awaited trip to Chinchilla for the event of the year.

It’s the second time the family has road-tripped for the Melon Festival, and Mrs Gower said after coming along in 2017 there was no question whether they would return.

“I think what really struck me on this particular Chinchilla Melon Festival was that the publicity was always happening,” she said.

“It was the photos, the brightness, the mess of it, the highlight of the watermelon ski.”

The well-organised publicity meant the Gowers had an easy time researching, planning, and booking their trip, and it was even better to find the event surpass expectations.

Once again the family will be camping at the polocrosse grounds, and this time Mrs Gower’s fabulous praise has enticed her sister’s family to join them.

“We’re making more of it cause there’s just so much on,” Mrs Gower said.

“On Friday night we’ve got the movie night for the kids.

“So we’ll get there in time and set up and then we’ll wander over and do that.”

The Gowers’ Saturday is already planned out too - a walk about the market stalls in the morning before watching the street parade and a munching on a delicious lunch, then taking to the arena for Melon Skiing and other events.

The key to the event’s success for Mrs Gower is the preparation, and the efforts of the dedicated volunteers.
