COVERING NEW GROUND

FLOORING AND TILING IN A PROPERTY CAN MAKE OR BREAK A SALE. SHAYNNA BLAZE SHARES HER EXPERT ADVICE ABOUT USING NEW FLOORING TO COVER OLD.

- WORDS: SHAYNNA BLAZE SELLING HOUSES AUSTRALIA

If flooring in your house is old and ugly, buyers can be easily put off by what they see as a big reno project. However, there are some solutions to covering those retro decorating choices that can make a big impression on the buyer… and not your bank balance.

If your wall tiles are ghastly, but in good condition, it’s a much quicker and cheaper job to simply lay new tiles over them.

This saves you the costly trouble of tearing out the offending decor and waterproofing.

Surface preparation is important - make sure the area you’re re-tiling is level and secure.

Any loose tiles should be replaced. Special primers and adhesives help the new tiles grip and bond with the existing ones. And you don’t have to limit yourself to interior tiles either.

Laying pavers over old tiles can totally transform dated areas of your property.

Another good way to lose those ’70s inspired rooms is with vinyl plank straight over the top of retro nightmares.

It’s a really effective way to bring an interior kicking and screaming into the modern day.

Not only does the floor look more streamlined but it cuts down on the visual clutter as well – so buyers aren’t distracted when they come into the room. Cold and uninviting tiles can be a real let-down in a property.

Underlay and new carpet can transform a chilly ceramic space into a welcoming room, with that touch of luxury underfoot.

So don’t feel you have to live with the past – use new flooring and tiles to cover old – it takes a lot of the work out of a big job. Watch Selling Houses Australia on Foxtel.
