Thunder prepares for Olympic-sized challenge

FOOTBALL: There’s no faulting the attitude of the South West Queensland Thunder men’s squad.

Soundly beaten in their last match, a 4-1 defeat to Gold Coast Knights, the players readily accepted their errors.

“They put their hands up after the game and said they got it wrong,” men’s team manager Jason Hall said.

“Some defensive errors really cost us, they know that, and they’re keen to make amends.

“It doesn’t get any easier for us against Olympic this Sunday but from what I’ve seen at training this week I think we will produce a really improved performance.”

The Knights punished Thunder errors shortly before and after half-time, scoring two key goals that ultimately secured them victory.

“We’ve focused on our defensive structure this week,” Hall said.

“It was small errors that proved costly against Gold Coast, but we know we need to improve anyway.”

On the road tomorrow, the Thunder will take a near fullstrength side to Brisbane aiming to lay the platform for what they hope will be a fruitful home run.

“Everyone came out of the game without any major concerns,” Hall said.

“Josh (Choice) did receive four stitches immediately after the game following a clash in it, but he’ll be right to play this weekend.

“The only player we’re missing at the moment is Kimba (Kimbombo).

“He would’ve been a great option for us against Knights and this weekend but has a small hamstring tear.

“We’re expecting him to be out for another three or four games.”

Olympic recorded their first win of the season last Sunday against the Western Pride – a 3-2 victory at home.

WOMEN AT HOME

The SWQ Thunder women will look to open their 2019 account with a win at home tomorrow.

Playing host to Souths United at Clive Berghofer Stadium from 3.30pm, the Thunder are coming off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Mitchelton.

After conceding a goal inside the first 10 minutes of the game slowly worked their way back into the game.
