Toowoomba recruits secure lucrative apprenticeships

-

FOUR Toowoomba residents have been selected for apprenticeships at one of the largest Caterpillar equipment dealerships in the world, beating 1000 other applicants.

Oscar Murray, Jayden Johnson, Luke Pollard and Samantha Hickling join a cohort of 75 apprentices at Hastings Deering this year, the company’s largest intake in five years.

Mr Murray attributed his application success to his farming background, his childhood cementing his decision to become a diesel fitter.

“I knew I didn’t want to do more school,” Mr Murray said.

“And I guess since all my brothers did trades, I am following in their footsteps.”

While three of four Toowoomba recruits will become diesel fitters, Mr Pollard is swapping life as a plumber’s labourer to become an auto electrician, hoping to have his own business one day.

“I am the only one in my family who has chosen to do a trade,” Mr Pollard said.

“Everyone including my siblings and my parents have gone to university, but I like working with my hands.

“I was really surprised to get an apprenticeship when I heard how many had applied. I think (it) will almost guarantee me a job.”

Apprenticeships are for four years with the ability to complete them earlier. All apprentices receive a nationally recognised qualification. The next intake will be in 2020.
