Making a difference

-

Helen Weir

I USED to live in Roma before I moved to Toowoomba about 12 years ago.

The reason why we moved to Toowoomba was because my daughter was born premature and we transferred here five days after her birth.

Toowoomba is a great city to live in. There are lots of things to do for children. There are plenty of parks and it’s also not far away from the coast.

In my spare time I enjoy spending it with family, doing art and craft, baking and studying.

I have been working in disability support for a long time.

I used to work at the Roma Hospital and I just kind of fell into it.

A highlight of working in the industry is being able to make a difference in someone’s life by being able to provide more quality of life.

MY FAMILY and I moved to Toowoomba from Injune.

We decided to move to Toowoomba because there were more amenities for us.

Everything in Toowoomba is a hop, skip and a jump compared to Brisbane (where I lived as a child). I would spend up to two hours in traffic, oneway to get to work.

We recently moved outside of Toowoomba on a 10-acre property and it is serene.

I have been only been working in the disability support sector for about 18 months but I have helped people with disabilities throughout my life. Not working in the industry doesn’t mean you don’t live it.

A great aspect of my job is the people who I work with.

I have worked in a lot of offices and I can’t say there was a place where everybody hasn’t gotten along.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending it with my children.

APART from a short amount of time where I lived in other cities, I have lived in Toowoomba for my whole life.

I like that Toowoomba has the country town feel while still being big enough to be a city. I have done some time living in places like Brisbane and Melbourne and the big city feel didn’t sit well with me.

Toowoomba has friendly and warm feel which is welcoming.

I have been working in community services since 2010 when I started a job as a receptionist at a foster home.

The reason why I got into the industry was because I always wanted to help people.

My family came from Taroom where there is the old country mentality of lending a hand which also swayed me to working in the industry.

It’s great being able to watch clients make a life for themselves.

I WAS born in Toowoomba in 1969. I had travelled extensively overseas and was in the navy before I moved back here about 19 years ago when I started studying at the University of Southern Queensland.

Toowoomba is the perfect place to raise a family. It gives you everything you need while the coast is only a short drive away.

I started working here in 2003 as a support worker.

The reason why I like working in the industry is because there is a genuine sense of achieving something meaningful at the end of the day.

We live here ‘cos we love it!
