RUGBY LEAGUE: The names William ‘Billy’ Pollard and Lindsay ‘Dooney’ Dunemann are synonomous with Newtown folklore, and they will again grace the TRL in season 2019.

The second division club has opted to carry on their legacy throughout the season, embroidering the pair’s names on their jerseys.

“Ever since we first sat down with the committee, we wanted to go back to a bit of tradition with the style of jersey and things like that,” president Paul Dolley said.

“The decision was made as we had a few talks of a way to honour a few recent Bluebags that had passed, and Billy and Dooney’s names popped up first.

“They were Newtown through and through, good clubmen and brought a lot to the club with their spirit.

“On social media Dooney’s daughters have said it was very thoughtful and they were proud to be associated with it. We feel like we’ve done the right thing here.”

The famous blue jerseys will return to action on Saturday for the first time since 2011 in a pre-season trial against Brothers’ reserve grade side at Glenholme Park (3.30pm).

“We’ll get to pull them on for the first time and the boys are really pumped about that after a long time in limbo,” he said.

“We’ve been training hard and there’s been good numbers. The guys are really committed to making a stamp on this competition.”
