Al-Anon offering support 58 years
Toowoomba programs supporting those affected by others’ drinking
WHILE most people would readily recognise AA as an organisation which supports alcoholics, far less is known of the agencies which provide support for those whose lives are impacted by having to live with someone with a drinking problem.
Having to live with a loved one who is an alcoholic can be just as stressful and life affecting as that of the alcoholic.
However, Al-Anon and Alateen family groups offer those people a chance to share and receive support from those similarly affected which helps develop strategies to cope.
Al-Anon is a support group for adults while Alateen offers support for younger people.
Both organisations have been long established in Toowoomba with Al-Anon celebrating 58 years in the Garden City this year.
Group participants remain anonymous and meetings, which are confidential, are held in a relaxed and caring atmosphere.
“We share our stories and study the Al-Anon literature which has some very wise advice,” said Sheryl (not her real name) who sought the support of Al-Anon after living with an alcoholic husband.
“It’s not a whinge session, you can find comfort in other people who have shared the same journey. I still live with a sober alcoholic.
“He credits Al-Anon with him giving up drinking.”
Al-Anon member Paul (not his real name) said the sessions helped people learn coping skills but also to have compassion for the alcoholic.
“People seem to think alcoholism is a sign of weakness in the person but it’s really a disease that the person has no control over,” he said.
Al-Anon meets in Toowoomba on Tuesdays from 7.30pm at the Baptist Church, 15 Eiser St, each Wednesday from noon at the Parish Centre, 123 Neil St, and Fridays from noon at St Luke’s Church administration building, 152 Harries St.
Alateen meets Tuesday from 4pm during school terms at the Dr Price Rooms, Little St.
Gatton’s Al-Anon meets Mondays from 7pm at Peace Lutheran, 85 Spencer St.
