Students all aboard for Titanic recreation

-

DOZENS of students from Gabbinbar State School have banded together to build in model of the Titanic to raise funds for Lifeline Darling Downs.

The Year 6 students (as well as students now in Year 7 who are no longer at the school) built the model Titanic out of 1800 nano block pieces, similar to tiny Lego blocks, over a six month period.

Lifeline Darling Downs CEO Derek Tuffield said the project initially came about after the model was donated to Lifeline.

“It was donated through the clothing bins,” he said.

“One of the sorters who knew about the Return to the Titanic ball came up to me and said look at this, it’s a Titanic that needs assembling.

“We thought it would be a great school project.”

Teacher Scott McGovern said his class jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the project.

“The students loved it, it was a fun project,” he said.

“They even used their free time to work on it.

“Every kid had a go at some stage, we shared the workload. They were keen to come in at lunchtime and have a go.”

The Titanic model put together by the Gabbinbar State School students will be auctioned off at Lifeline’s Return to the Titanic ball on April 13.

Tickets to the event, to be held at the Cathedral Centre on Neil St, are available at toowoombatickets.com.au.
