Tamara taps into what other people need
Q&A with Tamara Hilton, customer service and sales consultant at Highgrove Bathrooms, and winner of the company’s 2018 Queensland People’s Choice award, as voted by colleagues
WHAT’S YOUR ROLE?
I make sure people feel welcome when they walk into the store. The best part of my job is the interactions with people. I am very much a people person.
HOW DID YOU GET HERE?
I have done everything from beauty therapy – I have a Diploma of Beauty Therapy – to education, but the main focus for me is I that I need to be involved with people to some capacity in everything I do.
I left my previous role in administration because it was hands off with people.
My experience at a school as a youth engagement officer – monitoring and re-engaging students who may not have been participating in school as much as they are legally obliged to – I learnt how to deal with people from completely different demographics.
(At Highgrove Bathrooms) this helps me to understand where customers are coming from and make their experience a better experience.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD COLLEAGUE?
People who are supportive and encouraging – and it doesn’t go astray if they are also hardworking.
It’s important to make sure everyone feels like they can be happy in the place they work.
I know how important it is for me to feel valued as a staff member.
WHY DID YOU WIN PEOPLE’S CHOICE?
I try to make my experience with all other staff members a really positive one, whether that’s the way I speak to them or being helpful for them regardless of what store they are working in.
For me to succeed, everyone around me needs to succeed also. I will go out of my way for other people.
It doesn’t work if you are only looking after yourself – whether it be work or home or family.
