Grammar hopes to maintain form
CRICKET: Toowoomba Grammar is hoping to strike while the iron is hot and put themselves in GPS cricket finals contention.
Grammar comes up against a winless Brisbane State High School side today, chasing consecutive wins after a thumping 128-run defeat of Nudgee College last weekend.
The win moved TGS into fifth spot on the ladder, four points behind Brisbane Boys College, and coach Steve Fryer said it was important to maintain that momentum again today.
“The boys are feeling okay after last week. Our biggest challenge is consistency, and backing up that good performance,” Fryer said.
“If we don’t back it up, all of our good work will come undone.
“All we can do is worry about how we play. The big teams above us have right of way at the moment, but all we can do is keep winning. We have to hang in there and try and stay with them.”
With four rounds remaining, Fryer understands the importance of coming away with wins on the road.
“We have to be able to travel and win away,” he said.
“Three of our four remaining games are on the road, so we need to find a good winning form. “Brisbane State High has some good cricketers, and they haven’t been far away from the mark, so we need to play our best game.
“Their wicket is traditionally a bit here and there, so we won’t know what we get until we’re there. We want to play from in front, and if we adapt to conditions, we will play well.”
TCI REGULAR SEASON WRAPS UP
AFTER putting the race for the finals virtually beyond doubt with a stellar opening day, University can afford to play the patient game heading into the final day of the regular season.
Dismissing Highfields-Railways for 69 on day one, Uni went on to close out play at 139, with a first innings victory enough to see them book a spot in the semi final against Northern Brothers Diggers.
Diggers showed they will be tough to overcome in the postseason, completely shutting out Metropolitan-Easts in their round seven encounter.
They batted out the day to finish at 6-271, with Blake Anderson remaining unbeaten on 116.
Western Districts will have a week to recover with the minor premiership sewn up, and are well on track to go through the regular season undefeated.
They have Southern Districts at 2-18, still requiring 208 runs to secure first innings points.
