SWQ Thunder eager to record first win of season
FOOTBALL: Without a win or point after the first five rounds of the 2019 NPLQ season South West Queensland Thunder are eager to kick their season into gear.
At home to traditional NPLQ rivals Western Pride today, striker Anthony Grant hopes last week’s gallant effort will serve as a catalyst.
“We deserved more from last week’s game,” Grant said.
“It was pretty hard for us after the red (card) but I thought really hard and were a threat.
“We played some really good football we just didn’t get the result.”
The Thunder have shown they are capable of playing good football this season but errors have proved costly – errors that need to be reduced according to Grant.
“It’s been a pretty tough start to the season,” Grant said.
“We’re not where we want to be but our football hasn’t been that bad.
“I think in a lot of the games so far it’s just been little errors that have cost.
“We’re a young team and we have a lot of new players this season.
“There’s plenty of talent and potential in the team we just need to come together and get used to how each other plays.
“Once we do that I think we’ll be able to reduce those basic little errors.”
The Pride visit Clive Berghofer Stadium also in search of their first win this season and Grant believes the solution to beating the Ipswich side is relatively simple.
“We need to be calm on and off the ball,” he said.
“It’s all a matter of knowing when and where to apply pressure if we can do that and play to our strengths we should be able to get the result we want.”
WOMEN AWAY
Like their male counterparts the Thunder women are also seeking their first win of the season.
At home to the Pride last week the Thunder showed great potential in the first half.
Trailing 1-0 after the first half a tiring Thunder were punished by the Pride who won 7-1.
The Thunder are away to
The Gap today.
