Road blues present a hurdle to Grammar

A disappointing first innings has put a speed bump in Toowoomba Grammar’s GPS cricket campaign at the weekend.

Batting first on the road against Brisbane State High School, TGS struggled early on as they languished at 3-28.

Captain Matthew Watson (37) was able to steady the ship, however runs proved hard to come by for the remainder of the innings, as the visitors were dismissed for 120 from 42.1 overs.

BSHS opened their innings in a flash, with opener Crutis Howard belting 36 from 33 deliveries.

One of TGS’s standouts throughout the season, Elijah McRae, came to the rescue though, dismissing Howard and fellow opener Joseph Rangiah in quick succession to have them sitting at 2-49.

Harrison Weir and Paul Draheim claimed the next two wickets to keep TGS in the contest at 4-67, but the home side was able to coast from that point on, chasing down the total with five wickets and 57 balls in hand.

Despite the loss, Toowoomba Grammar remains firmly in contention for a finals spot with three competition rounds remaining.

Currently sitting in sixth, a win this weekend in their away match against Brisbane Boys College would see them move into fourth.

Full scorecards and the wrap of the final round of the TCI A-grade competition will appear in tomorrow’s The Chronicle.
