Department purchases corner shop

-

A TOOWOOMBA corner store has been bought by the Queensland Government.

The two-storey property on Wine Dr in Wilsonton Heights sold through Colliers International for $400,000, following a lengthy expressions of interest campaign.

Lead agent Arthur Carpenter said the Department of Communities bought the site from the long-term owner, who operated a convenience store from the ground floor.

But Mr Carpenter said he wasn’t privy to the full plans the department had for the building.

“It’s actually the Department of Communities who has bought that,” he said.

“It had been a corner store for over 10 years. The owner ran it himself.”

Mr Carpenter said the the purchase could have something to do with the neighbouring community centre next door, which was also owned by the State Government.

“We’ve been talking about the community centre and redeveloping it for a new centre for the area,” he said.

“They guys on the ground got a brief about what they’ve got to do, but I haven’t been told much.”

The department was contacted by The Chronicle for comment but didn’t respond in time for deadline.

Mr Carpenter said the previous owner Terry Roney sold the property as part of his move into retirement.

“He has relocated and retired so he’s looking to do a motorbike tour in South Africa,” he said.

“He’s just retiring and wants to tie up loose ends.”
