GRANTHAM Farmworkers Lodge could double its capacity by the end of the year if demand for the facility continues to grow.
At present, the facility can house up to 300 backpackers in 27 lodges, but the materials required to make another 30 lodges had been purchased are on site ready to use.
Lodge manager Rodney Applin said the demand for accommodation in the upcoming farming season would determine how quickly construction started.
“We are still getting about 10 accommodation inquires a day, if not more,” he said.
“But at this stage because of the lack of rain the season hasn’t kicked off yet.”
Despite the lack of work available, Mr Applin said backpackers were still choosing to stay at the lodge.
At the start of March, about 75 backpackers were staying at the facility, but Mr Applin expected numbers to double as soon as the season started.
Since the facility opened its doors in July 2018, backpackers from across the globe have stayed at the property.
In October, the facility reached record capacity with 180 boarders, which surprised Mr Applin.
The high demand has caused the facility to grow quicker than expected.
At present, construction workers were putting the final touches on a second pool for the facility.
Mr Applin said the new pool was built alongside the existing pool to create a large entertainment area.
A restaurant is also on site at the lodge, which is expected to reopen shortly after being modified.
