Simpson’s code switch helps grow Downs AFL
He’s a familiar name on the Darling Downs that is hoping to bring his experience to a fresh caper.
Mitch Simpson, who previously served as GM of Downs Rugby, is the newest face at AFL Darling Downs, joining in the fresh position of competition and club development manager.
It is a return to the sport he played growing up in New South Wales, and he has already felt welcomed to the role by clubs on the Downs.
“For mine the AFL has always been a leader in the sports industry. I grew up playing AFL in Wollongong, and it was always a goal to work there,” Simpson said.
“Then the opportunity arose to work locally.
“It’s the first time a full-time operator has been in the seat for a lot of the clubs, and they’ve been positive.
“The club culture is great up here.”
With the creation of the new position, Simpson wants to create a valuable experience for participants.
“It’s amazing to see how much resourcing is put into the grassroots level from the AFL,” he said.
“Locally, this role being an added resource to the clubs in the area is certainly exciting for the region, and hopefully from my point of view is something I can add a lot of value to.”
Simpson said he hopes the game-day atmosphere can reach a new peak in the coming season.
“What I can add to the clubs to eventually build is the atmosphere,” he said.
“The one thing I’d like to see at the end of the year is healthy club game days, big friendly crowds and lots of atmosphere, whether that’s watching the U8s or senior football.”
The senior men will start their season on March 30.
